TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

  • This interactive history lesson brings to life the founding of Johannesburg and the discovery of gold on the reef.
  • Vibrant and upbeat Soweto

Apartheid Museum illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid. Visitors walk through the 22 individual exhibition areas, which contain film footage, photographs, text panels and artefacts illustrating the events and human stories behind apartheid. At the end you’ll have a far deeper understanding of the why and how of apartheid and the new South Africa. Afterwards head to Soweto- an acronym of South-Western Township- provides visitors with a unique cultural experience. It is the largest black residential area in South Africa, a product of the apartheid government’s policy of segregation. A lively, cultural rich area on the periphery of Johannesburg, it has a rich political history- it was a site of struggle in the fight for freedom in South Africa. The area has been home to number of political, sporting and social personalities, among them former President Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Tutu. Soweto’s historical significance and its vibrant buzz make it a must-see for visitors looking for more than a wildlife and nature experience in South Africa.
